Scanleaf is a free document scanner for your phone. Point the camera at a page and you get a clean, straightened PDF with the text on it recognised, so you can search it later. No account, no watermark, and no limit on how much you scan.
Everything runs on your device. Scanning, OCR text recognition, building the PDF and searching inside it all work offline — turn on aeroplane mode and it all still works.
WHAT YOU CAN SCAN
Receipts and invoices. Contracts, agreements and forms. ID cards and passports, both sides on one page. Business cards, straight into your contacts. A whiteboard after a meeting. Two pages of a book, split down the gutter into separate pages. Handwritten notes, letters, homework, recipes — anything flat.
WHAT IT DOES
• Scan to PDF with edge detection, a live outline on the page and auto-capture
• Five scan modes: Document, Whiteboard, Book, ID card and Business card
• Straightens a page shot at an angle and removes the shadow your hand casts on it
• Nine filters, including Auto colour, Warm and Cool for a page shot under bad light
• Brightness and contrast, and a cleanup brush that lifts a stray mark off the paper
• Mark up a page with a pen or a highlighter
• Multi-page documents — add, reorder by dragging, retake, delete, or pull the pages you tick into a document of their own
• Save as PDF, JPG or Word (.docx), or merge several documents into one PDF
• Image to PDF: turn photos you already took into a document, without scanning again
• Six page sizes, including one that fits each page to its own photograph
• Lock a PDF with an AES-128 password before you send it
• Print straight from the app
• Read a PDF inside the app before anyone else does — pinch to zoom, swipe between pages
• OCR text recognition in English and Hindi, running entirely on your phone
• Search finds words inside your scans, not just filenames
• Copy the recognised text out of any page
• Read the QR codes and barcodes already printed on a page
• Turn a scanned business card into a contact
• Share straight to WhatsApp, Gmail, Drive or anywhere else
A SCANNER, NOT A SUBSCRIPTION
Scanleaf is a PDF scanner you own, not one you rent. No sign-up. No free trial that expires. No watermark stamped across your documents. No cap on pages per month. Nothing at all is locked behind a payment — the paid option removes the ads and changes nothing else about the app.
The ads are in two places and nowhere else: a banner at the bottom of your library, and one full-screen ad after a document has finished exporting or sharing. Never before an export, never while you are scanning or editing, not on your first few exports, and at most one a day.
YOUR SCANS STAY ON YOUR PHONE
Your documents are never uploaded, never indexed on a server, and never shared with anyone.
The camera is the only sensor Scanleaf can touch. It has no permission to read your files, your photos, your location, your contacts or your microphone, and you can check that yourself in Settings → Apps → Scanleaf → Permissions. Photos you import come through Android's photo picker, which hands over the one picture you chose. When you export, Android's own file picker asks where to put the file.
Exported PDFs are clean too: no producer string, no device name, no location, nothing identifying you. A scan of your passport should not carry your phone's fingerprint, so it doesn't.
WHY THIS EXISTS
Microsoft retired Microsoft Lens from both app stores in February 2026 and switched off scanning the following month. Its suggested replacement saves only to cloud storage and requires an account. Scanleaf is for people who just wanted a free scanner app that saved a file to the phone.
GOOD TO KNOW
• Scans are stored inside the app, so uninstalling removes them. Settings has "Export all documents" to keep a copy wherever you choose.
• Searchable text inside exported PDFs covers Latin scripts. Hindi text is always readable and copyable inside the app under "Scanned text".
