About this app
Accurate, fast, very low latency: words appear while people are still talking. Tingdong turns what is said in meetings, lectures and conversations into live captions on your Android phone or tablet. When someone speaks another language, turn on translation and read the original and your language together, line by line. Captions and translation work in 60 languages, and same-language captions give each speaker a color.
To talk face to face, open Conversation, an interpreter in one stream: tap “I speak”, talk, then tap “I'm done”, and Tingdong reads your words aloud in their language. Tap “They speak” and their answer appears in your language, or tap “Hand over” so they can answer with one tap or by typing. Tingdong can also show you how to pronounce the translation. Big text fills the screen, so the other person can read along.
In Live and Translate, captions keep running when you switch apps or turn the screen off. A notification shows the session with Pause, Resume and End, and picture-in-picture keeps the newest lines on screen above other apps. You can start captions from a Quick Settings tile.
Every session is saved as a transcript on your device. Search it, copy it, share it, or export it as TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT. Sessions can be recorded on your device with their transcripts, so you can play one back from any line. By default, Tingdong asks when a session ends whether to keep its audio; in Settings, Save Recordings can also be Always or Never. Recordings stay on your device and are never uploaded.
New users get free credits to try Tingdong. After that, Tingdong needs a plan: Standard (1,000 credits a month) or Pro (5,000 credits a month), bought through Google Play. A credit is about one minute of captions or translation. Members can also buy credit packs, which never expire. The free credits never turn into a paid plan by themselves. When a member's monthly credits run out, captions continue for 10 more minutes that month; after that, add credits or wait for the next refill.
Tingdong listens through your device's microphone. It can't caption phone calls.
Privacy: live audio goes from your device to a third-party speech recognition provider (in the United States) to make the captions and translations; it does not pass through our server. Transcripts and recordings stay on your device. There is no account and no sign-up. Settings › Delete My Data deletes everything on the device and your usage records on our server.
Tingdong is an everyday communication aid. It is not a replacement for professional interpreters, captioning services or medical devices, and it shouldn't be relied upon in emergencies.
Tingdong's interface is available in 19 languages, including English. Tingdong is also available for Mac and Windows computers, sold separately.

What’s new
New: Device Audio. Captions and translation for sound playing on this device. Choose Microphone or Device Audio in Live and Translate. Each time Device Audio starts, Android asks you to allow screen recording. Some apps do not allow their sound to be recorded; Tingdong then says no sound is coming in.
