The Holy Scriptures Old Version of 1569 is known as the "Bear Bible" It uses the name "Bear Bible" because a printer's mark appeared on the cover, with the image of a bear trying to reach a honeycomb. Translated from the Original Texts in Hebrew and Greek into Spanish by Casiodoro de Reina.
The Casiodoro de Reina Bible; known as the "Bear Bible" was published in Basel, Switzerland on September 28, 1569. This work has the figure of a bear on the cover that is standing next to a tree. This Bible is rendered directly from the original Hebrew and Greek texts.
Apart from the original text and the Latin versions, when making his translation, Cassiodoro de Reina had before him the previous works of Valdés (for example, his Psalms in Spanish), Enzinas, and Pérez de (la) Pineda, as well as the Ferrari Bible.
In the 1569 translation, Reina used the latest advances in Biblical science. For example, he used the verse division of the New Testament, which had been introduced in print only a few years earlier (1550), and lamented that a new Peshitta publication had come too late for him to take it into account.
This work has been subjected to many revisions, such as that of Mr. Valera, a friend of Reina's, who made the first revision and then many others. The last one in 1995 by United Bible Societies. It is currently known as the Reina-Valera Bible.
