The interactive map of saloni.ca with 7000+ old photos of Thessaloniki in 4000+ geolocated points is a tool for documenting the historical topography of Thessaloniki. The application brings all this information to your hand and gives you the opportunity to walk through the city and see the images “back in time” from what your eyes see, how the city used to be exactly where you are standing, but also the opportunity to read the history associated with the point.

You can navigate Thessaloniki through different time periods — from the late 19th century, i.e. before the fire of 1917, to the post-war era, but also filter the points by period and activate historical maps, such as the one from 1919.

Each image is geolocated with attention to detail. The arrow at each point indicates the direction of capture, allowing you to understand the relationship of the photo to the current space.

The identification of the points is based on a systematic study of the photographs themselves and historical data, aiming for the greatest possible accuracy. Each photograph also leads to a text with more detailed information about the history.
