Never in the history of mankind have there been so many human beings fleeing their homes, even their country. In 2020, more than 80 million people are affected. They live inconceivable experiences, find themselves in precarious situations, do not know what their future will be.
Running away was also one of the only possibilities for those who survived the Nazi extermination plan. With the disappearance of the last witnesses, there will soon be no one left to convey the lived and tangible experience of the Shoah. This is all the more regrettable as the testimonies constitute precious and touching sources of information for the younger generations. Through these stories, history comes to life and faces.
The "Flee the Shoah" application offers young people, from the age of 14, access to unique historical resources thanks to a digital medium based on filmed testimonies and authentic documents. It can be used in class or individually.
The application is downloaded free of charge on a computer, tablet or smartphone. The trailer familiarizes the user with the purpose of the app and initiates the encounter with witnesses. The core of the app is five audiovisual testimonials from people telling their story during WWII and how from which they managed to escape the Shoah.
Each story is unique. Taken together, they span a variety of journeys and destinies. They deal with life before, experiences during the Shoah (persecutions, flight, raids, deportation, children in hiding, refuge in Switzerland) and life after.
The user can choose to view a testimonial lasting about twenty minutes. The story is accompanied by succinct contextual explanations. It is divided into four chronological stages corresponding to as many thematic areas. The user chooses two areas that he wishes to study further.
The user continues his journey by collecting additional information offered in the application, analyzing documents, formulating hypotheses, formulating observations. He can thus enrich his understanding of the testimony heard and express himself in a personal capacity.
The journey is documented by means of an automatically generated digital album which can be sent by email to one or more people of their choice. The album constitutes a personal trace of the virtual encounter with a witness. No data is collected by a third party.
The use of the application is facilitated by simple and free download methods. It works offline and does not require network access while in use.
Educational material is available on the website dedicated to the app.
