The Koran (which means recitation in Arabic). This is the sacred book of Islam.
The Qur'an contains the word of God (Allah), revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Muhammad) through the Archangel Gabriel (Jibril).
The Quran consists of chapters, called suras (surah). A surah is composed of several ayates (verses). There are 114 suras and 6236 ayates (verses).
Suras are not classified in the chronological order of their revelation, but in the order in which the Prophet Muhammad classified them. Chronologically, the first verse is called "Iqra" which means to read. But the first surah of the Qur'an is called the Fatiha, which means opening, and is composed of 7 verses.
