The Free Teaching Foundation was founded in 1876 by a group of professors (among whom were Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Gumersindo de Azcárate and Nicolás Salmerón), separated from the University for defending academic freedom and refusing to adjust its teachings. to official dogmas in religious, political or moral matters. This prompted them to continue their educational task outside the State university centers, through the creation of a private educational establishment, whose first experiences were oriented toward university education and, later, primary and secondary education.

Joaquín Costa, Augusto González de Linares, Hermenegildo Giner, Federico Rubio and other personalities committed to educational, cultural and social renewal participated in the project.

Starting in 1881, professors trained there began to form part of the Institution's teaching staff (Manuel Bartolomé Cossío, who would succeed Giner as head of the ILE, Ricardo Rubio, Pedro Blanco, Ángel do Rego, José Ontañón, Pedro Jiménez-Landi ...), whose work will strengthen the institutional project and guarantee its continuity. From 1876 until the civil war of 1936, the ILE became the center of gravity of an entire era of Spanish culture and a channel for the introduction into Spain of the most advanced pedagogical and scientific theories that were being developed outside our borders. , launching a project to modernize Spanish society based on education, science and culture.
