The Pillars of Fasting

Asy-Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-'Utsaimin Rahimahullah was asked about the pillars of fasting?

He replied: "Fasting has one pillar, namely worshiping Allah by refraining from breaking the fast, starting at the rising of dawn and ending until the setting of the sun.

The dawn in question is the second dawn, not the first. There are 3 distinguishing features between the first and second dawn, namely:

First: The second dawn is widened on the horizon, stretching from north to south.

While the first dawn sticks out vertically from east to west.

Second: (The light that appears) at the second dawn will not return to darkness, but the light will continue to get brighter until the sun rises. As for the first dawn, the light that appears will return to darkness.

Third: the white light that appears at the second dawn merges with the horizon. While at the first dawn, the light and the horizon are separated by the dark color of the sky.

At the first dawn, there is no sharia law (which is mandatory), it is not permissible to perform the dawn prayer, and it is not forbidden for someone who wants to fast to eat, unlike the second dawn.
