Our overarching goal is to prevent nonmedical prescription drug use (NPDU), a significant, yet often overlooked, public health problem. As part of the project, we have developed GUARD-T (Generating Understanding and Awareness of Responsible Prescription Drug Use- Teens), an immersive, interactive experience (i.e., educational video game) with an overarching storyline (e.g., “mystery” to be solved). GUARD-T allows adolescents to safely explore real-world contexts in a virtual environment where they are exposed to prescription drugs (PDs), provides opportunities (from the first-person perspective) to misuse drugs and experience randomly-generated consequences of that misuse, and clarifies risks and teaches refusal skills at key moments.
This project is supported, in part, by the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute’s National Center for Opioid & Addiction Research (NCOAR).
