The Ancient Serdica Archaeological Complex – the largest open air museum in the Balkans – was opened in 2016 in central Sofia to offer visitors a glimpse into the Bulgarian capital city’s Ancient Roman past.
The complex, largely below street level and covering an area of about 9000 square meters, includes streets, baths, houses, an early Christian basilica and a late Mediaeval church.
One of the biggest attractions within the complex is the Decumanus Maximus, which in Roman times used to be the main street of the city that would later become Sofia.
