The Military Police of the State of São Paulo (PM-SP) has as its primary function the ostensive police and the preservation of public order in São Paulo. For organizational purposes it is an auxiliary and reserve force of the Brazilian Army, as well as its co-sisters and is part of the Brazilian Public Security and Social Defense System and is subordinate to the Government of the State of São Paulo through the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP ).

On December 15, 1831, by law of the Provincial Assembly, the Permanent Municipal Guard Corps was created, composed of one hundred squares on foot, and thirty squares on horseback, in compliance with the Imperial decree issued by Regente Feijó. Within the province (current state of São Paulo), the Military Police, as well as the Fire Department, the National Guard, the Navy and regular Army troops, were part of the São Paulo Public Force. Its members are called state military personnel (article 42 of the CRFB), as well as members of the São Paulo Military Fire Brigade (CB PMESP). Currently, it is the largest police force in Brazil and the third largest military institution in Latin America, with approximately 100,000 police officers.
