About this app

Among the commentaries that have had a significant presence in Islamic culture is "Ruh al-Ma'ani" by its author, Mahmud al-Alusi al-Baghdadi, Abu al-Thana' Shihab al-Din, a scholar of the thirteenth century AH. He is known as "al-Alusi the Great" to distinguish him from other scholars of the Alusi family, whose members were renowned for their scholarship.

Al-Alusi, may God have mercy on him, was the leading scholar in Iraq during his time, a rare gem among scholars. He mastered a vast array of transmitted and rational sciences, possessing a profound understanding of both the branches and foundations of Islamic jurisprudence. Furthermore, he was an unparalleled commentator on the Quran and an unrivaled hadith scholar.

Although he adhered to the Shafi'i school of thought, he followed the Hanafi school in many matters. He was knowledgeable about the differences between the various schools of thought and well-versed in different religious sects and doctrines. Towards the end of his life, he leaned towards independent legal reasoning (ijtihad). He left behind a vast and beneficial scholarly legacy, foremost among which is his commentary entitled "Ruh al-Ma'ani fi Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim wa al-Sab' al-Mathani" (The Spirit of Meanings in the Interpretation of the Magnificent Qur'an and the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses). This commentary—as is evident to the reader—is the product of the author's utmost effort and dedication, resulting in a comprehensive interpretation that incorporates the views of the early scholars, both in transmission and understanding, and includes the opinions of later scholars with complete honesty and care. It is, in truth, a commentary that encapsulates the essence of previous commentaries.

Furthermore, when the author, may God have mercy on him, quotes from the commentaries of his predecessors, he is not merely a transmitter. Rather, he appoints himself as an impartial judge of everything he quotes, a meticulous critic, and a thorough examiner of every opinion and statement. Only then does he freely express his own opinion on what he quotes.

This application of Imam Al-Alusi's commentary is distinguished from others by several features:
