Shiv Puran is one of eighteen Puran genre of Sanskrit texts in Hinduism, and part of the Shaivism literature corpus.It primarily centers around the Hindu god Shiva and goddess Parvati, but references and reveres all gods.
Shiv Puran is depiction of Shiva-Bhakti and Shiva-Mahima. Shiv Mahapuran - the supreme of all the puranas, which was narrated by Lord Shiva himself and which was later retold by Sage Vyas with the permission of Maharshi Sanatkumar, for the benediction of common man. The Shiva Purana or Shiva Mahapurana is the supreme Purana of the Shaivites. Shiv Purana is attributed to Rishi ved Vyas. The Mahapurana details the creation, preservation and ultimate destruction of the universe and serves as a guide to the worship of the Supreme God Shiva, among other gods and goddesses. According to a tradition which is stated in the Vāyaviya Saṁhitā of this text, the original text was known as the Shaiva Purana. Although it may be weakly and narrowly cited that the Shiva Purana is a tamas purana as per the Padma Purana, Shaivites consider this Puran to be the supreme Sattva text and a guide for true virtuous living.The first seven chapters of Shiva Mahapuran recites the stories of Mahathmanya. That is what are the benefits of listening and chanting Shiva katha and how to get the best of it. There are examples from hindu mythology regarding this.
