Sports autos started to appear in the late 40's with the introduction of 'sporting' road vehicles from now famous manufacturers. In those days, the ethos of the sports vehicle was a one designed not only for the road but for motorsport competition as well.

It was Ford who changed the concept of sports autos with, what many people believe to be the first supercar, the GT40, in 1965. To meet regulations they had to make a number of 'road legal' versions of the GT40, hence its inclusion here as the first super auto for the road. In the late 60's they went on to make seven Mark III GT40's - 'softened' for road use.

One of the most powerful and significant super vehicles to date, the beautiful Ferrari 365 BB was made in the 1974, in the face of the fuel crisis. Following the new trend, the manufacturers of BB decided that it should be mid-engined.

The BB's rival and the King of Supercars, the astounding Lamborghini Countach LP400 was made in the same year. The Countach could be accurately described as the most stunning shape to ever hit the road. It would go on, in all its incarnations, to be the definitive supercar for another 15 years.
