About this app

New release 2026 - version 3.0 is here!

TopOpt is an interactive topology optimization app from the TopOpt group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Place loads and supports, and the optimized structure appears and updates in real time while you edit.

Two problem types:
• Minimum compliance: the stiffest structure for a given amount of material
• Compliant mechanisms: a force inverter and a gripper, with input and output ports and their springs

Both can be extended with:
• A local volume constraint for bone-like porous infill
• A von Mises stress constraint, with the stress field shown on the design
• The robust formulation, which makes the design insensitive to its members being made thinner or thicker

Further features:
• Presets: MBB beam, L-bracket, cantilever and femur, and force inverter and gripper for mechanisms
• Up to six loads and three load cases, and scaled loads
• Loads, supports and ports are moved by dragging their symbols, and loads and ports can be rotated
• Passive solid and void regions, and flexible void regions that the optimization may move
• Custom grid size, sharpness and filter radius
• Export of the design as an STL file for 3D printing

The app runs on Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, and on macOS, Windows and Linux.
