About this app

Cosmic Stroll Version 2.1 is a Google Cardboard VR App that uses real astrophysics and cosmology science results developed at the University of Portsmouth using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Using your mobile phone, iOS or Android, you can board the Cosmic Stroll’s Space Station to make your very own spacewalk exploring how the real universe looks like: plenty of beautiful galaxies and dark voids… And for the first time, you will be able to travel back in time to epochs when our own planet did not even exist yet!

CS2 builds upon the initial work developed at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth. This version now contains a VR Exhibition on a space station. This then leads you out into the Universe 3 billion years ago. You will see what look like stars. They are in fact galaxies!

Move around the space station by moving your head and putting the white dot cursor over the blue/green spheres, then stare at it for about ten seconds. When you do this the dot will turn into a circle. You need to keep the sphere inside the circle for about 10 seconds and then you will be automatically taken to that location. Just repeat the process to move to the next location. When you are outside of the space station you will see actual galaxy, data collected as part of the ICGS work with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data and the amazing work developed by Prof. Claudia Maraston and her team.

Move through the galaxy data in the same way as inside the space station by staring at nearby galaxies. Look for the green dot to return to the space station. The deeper into space you go the further back in time you are travelling. Find the green sphere to return to the space station.
