As for its number: we cannot limit it, because the scholars differed regarding it. Some of them counted it as seventy, and some of them more than that, and it was stated in the work of Abd al-Razzaq and others: It was said to Ibn Abbas: Are the major sins seven? He said: It is closer to seventy.
Some investigators have established a criterion by which it is known: which is that every sin for which there is a punishment in this world, or a threat in the afterlife, such as torment, anger, punishment, threat, or curse, in the Book of God Almighty, or in the hadith of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. Peace be upon him, he is great.
In this application, the two most important and famous books on the subject of major sins have been collected, namely The Major Sins by Imam al-Dhahabi, and The Book of Punishments on Committing Major Sins by Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami.
