Alp and mountain inns are at the origin of tourism and alpinism. During the alpine season, the Alps come alive with people and animals. Individual dairymen or alp families offer hikers and alp guests food and drink, often with their own alp products. In the 18th century only the alpine huts offered protection and shelter, food and drink. The Alpan speakers and herdsmen described in the popular Alpbeizli guides are thus continuing an old tradition. They offer their products to Alp friends and hikers during the Alp season. Now, for the first time, all regional Alpbeizli guides in Switzerland have been published in a generous volume.
