BoatSpeedo is a simple to use speedometer app, optimised for sailing and motor boating.

It has a large clear display and simple controls to toggle the speed units between knots, mph and kmh.

It is GPS based and measures speed based on actual distance travelled. This differs from probe or paddle wheel based boat speedometers which measure speed through the water and hence are affected by the speed of the water itself, i.e. tides and currents.

Using for sailing dinghy training in the 0 to 15 knot range. This does one job pretty well - readout stability is good. Portrait and landscape format with the decimals on the same line as the integers. Works really well. No ads. No distractions. Quick updates while sailing, appropriate damping so numbers don't jerk around With sailing we are continuously referring to fractions of a knot to see if we are accelerating or are going too fast and can point higher to keep to our target speed.

Love the big numbers and the decimal, but it shows instantaneous speed rather than an average over a period of time. At canal boat speeds (2 to 4 MPH) it bounces all over the place (due to minor GPS inaccuracies).

Dead simple. I use it on an old phone velcro'd to the cockpit of our sailboat. Large display is easy to read at a glance. Really helpful for improving sail trim. 5 stars.
