The Anagrind is for cryptic crossword solvers who do their own work. It's a solving workspace — a digital version of the scrap paper you've always used — that helps you see the letters differently without ever handing you the answer. The satisfaction of cracking a clue is yours. We just help you get there.

HOW IT WORKS
• SET UP THE CLUE: Enter your anagram fodder and set an optional enumeration to match the answer's shape. Use ? for unknown letters to create assignable blank tiles, then scatter them onto the board.
• ADD THE DEFINITION: Pin an optional definition so you stay anchored to what you're looking for.
• WORK THE BOARD: Drag letters into slots, fade out ones you'd like to hide, or lock in certainties. Tap rescramble for a fresh perspective, or long-press it to return all unlocked letters to the board.
• PINCH TO SORT: Pinch the board to instantly split tiles into vowels and consonants. Is Y a vowel/consonant? Your choice.
• THE FINISH: The word emerges through your effort. The Anagrind just holds the letters.
