Khalaf ʿan Ḥamzah (خلف عن حمزة) is one of the recognized riwāyāt (narrations) of Qurʾān recitation within the canonical ten qirāʾāt system.

1️⃣ The Main Imam: Hamzah al-Kufi

Full name: Ḥamzah ibn Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt

Lived: 8th century CE

City: Kufa (Iraq)

One of the Ten Qirāʾāt Imams

Known for strong tajwīd precision and distinctive pronunciation features.

2️⃣ The Narrator: Khalaf ibn Hisham
Student of Hamzah transmitted Hamzah’s recitation. Also later became an independent Imam of a qirāʾah himself (Qirāʾat Khalaf al-ʿĀshir).

So “Khalaf ʿan Ḥamzah” means: The riwāyah (narration) of Khalaf from Hamzah.

3️⃣ Position Among the Qirāʾāt
Among the Ten Qirāʾāt, each Imam has two famous narrators (rawis).

For Hamzah, the two main narrators are: Khalaf and Khallād

So “Khalaf ʿan Hamzah” is one of the two primary transmissions of Hamzah’s recitation.

4️⃣ Key Characteristics of Khalaf ʿan Hamzah

Some distinctive features of rewayat khalaf an hamzah include:

Hamzah’s recitation is known for frequent use of imālah — a leaning of the “ā” sound toward “ē”.

🔹 2. Strong Madd (elongation)

Long vowel elongations are often pronounced more prominently.

Hamzah applies short pauses in certain words without taking a breath.
