“We live in the present, we always think about the future, but we cannot forget the past. The rescue of memory is what makes the Society strong and strong ”. (Dr. Antônio Medina)

On May 13, 1953, when the city of Rio de Janeiro was still the capital of the country or the Federal District, members of the Brazilian Society of Angiology elected the first Directorate of the Regional of Rio de Janeiro, which were: Drs. Sydney Arruda , the first president, Fernando Luiz Vieira Duque, Secretary, and Antônio Rebello Filho, Treasurer. Thus began the history of SBACV-RJ, in a solemn session of the SBA held at the Union of Doctors. According to Dr. Merisa Garrido, the only woman to preside over Regional, the dedication of Drs. Mário Degni (SP) and Rubens Carlos Mayall (RJ) made a difference in the progress of the Society in the State.

The book Memória Viva, organized by Dr. Julio Joaquim Pierin Siqueira, records the historic meeting that started the Regional of Rio de Janeiro and says that those present were declared Effective Partners of the Society. Although not all are active in the field of Angiology, which was not surprising, since the Specialty itself was in its infancy. The term Angiology had been coined only a decade ago, in 1942, by Martorell and his colleagues, and the International Society of Angiology, created in 1950, was still slowly organizing itself.

The first Regional management, led by Dr. Sydney Arruda, accounted for 18 ordinary sessions in various services with presentation of clinical cases and debates. An impressive number for a society still in formation. “At that time, all of us surgeons were pioneers, because arterial surgery was just beginning. We went to the Legal Medical Institute at night to train, operating on the corpses. We had to leave Brazil to be able to learn ”. Remembers Dr. Carlos José de Brito.

In 1961 Drs. Algy de Medeiros and Amélio Pinto Ribeiro created in Rio de Janeiro the Revista Brasileira de Angiologia - called Angiopathies - which for some years was the official organ of the SBA. The passage of time brought growth! Scientific meetings were structured and the number of members increased. The Regional matured and in 1971 the Information Bulletin was launched, which later evolved into the current Revista de Angiologia e de Vascular Surgery. That same year, the foundations for the construction of the current Regional Meetings were laid. Still in 1971, Dr. Antonio Joaquim Monteiro da Silva organized and chaired the Angolan Journey of Guanabara, at the Central Hospital of Aeronautics. The following year, during the VIII International Congress of Angiology and XIX Brazilian Congress of Angiology, held at the Hotel Glória, the first Specialist Titles were awarded to Angiologists and Vascular Surgeons; from the analysis of the curricula of colleagues from all over the country who already practiced the specialties.

In 1984, Dr. Antônio Monteiro was responsible for holding the Carioca Meeting of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, at the Central Hospital of the Army. In 1986, under the Presidency of Dr. Paulo Roberto Mattos da Silveira, the Meeting started to be organized by the Regional Office and, over time, became one of the most important events in the scientific calendar of Rio de Janeiro.
