Even though I ride the train every day, there's so much I don't know. There are so many things like that about trains.
For example, a train with "Out of Service" as its destination. What kind of train is that?
"Railway Trivia Quiz" is a quiz app that asks you "why" about trains with three choices. From the levers in the driver's cab, the devices on the roof, the stones laid on the tracks, to the ingenuity hidden in stations. You can enjoy learning the reasons behind things you see every day on your commute but have overlooked, without needing any specialized knowledge. Each question takes 30 seconds, so you can play by just reading through the parts that interest you.
◆ What you can do with this app
【1】The scenery outside your window will change on your commute tomorrow.
All questions come with explanations. Not only does it tell you the correct answer, but it also explains "why" it is that way, making you want to check it out on the platform as soon as you read it.
For example, the overhead wires on the roof aren't straight, but strung in a zigzag pattern. What's the purpose of that? Why must the stones laid on the tracks be angular and not round? Why do brakes work when you release air? What does the motor switch to when a train decelerates?
Knowing this will make the familiar scenery outside your window clearer.
[2] For both those unfamiliar with trains and those who have ridden them for a long time
Divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Beginner level can be solved even without extensive train knowledge. What happens when you push the master controller forward? Why is the luggage rack called a "net"? What determines up and down directions? Technical terms are explained in the problem statement before being asked, so even beginners won't get stuck.
Intermediate level focuses on terms you may have heard but can't explain precisely. Powering, leaving the depot, block signaling, train tokens. Understanding the meaning of terms used in the field will change how you see trains.
Advanced level isn't about memorizing dates or numbers. It's a collection of stories that overturn assumptions and stories where cause and effect are unpredictable. What shape is the surface of the wheel that contacts the rails? This is what the designer of the Shinkansen's distinctive "platypus" front end actually said.
[3] The few minutes you spend waiting for a train become time to gain knowledge.
No internet connection is required. You can play on the platform, in tunnels, or anywhere else without worrying about signal strength.
Each route (a set of questions) consists of 5 questions. Completing one unlocks the next route. Your score is recorded for each route, so you can continue from where you left off and aim for a perfect score as many times as you like. Collecting badges as you progress provides another incentive to keep playing.
