About this app

The treadmill began life as a prison punishment device.

A British engineer designed it in 1818 to put prisoners to work. Inmates trod on steps around the outside of a huge wheel, turning it hour after hour to grind grain. By 1824 more than fifty British prisons had one.
The most popular machine in any gym today started out as a punishment.

You go to the gym. How much of its story do you actually know?

Workout Trivia Quiz is a three-choice quiz about everything that surrounds training — the gear, the records, the words, the history — with a full explanation behind every answer.

WHAT YOU GET

1. Something worth repeating tomorrow
Every answer leaves you with a "so that's why". The judging panel at what is often called the first bodybuilding contest included Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. It happened at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1901.
Right or wrong, you come away with something.

2. A chance to correct the myths you already believe
"Next-day soreness is lactic acid still sitting in the muscle." "A chimpanzee is five times stronger than a human."
Both are repeated constantly, and research does not support either. Lactate returns to resting levels about an hour after you stop, yet soreness peaks 24 to 72 hours later. The timing simply does not line up.
This app handles those stories with the evidence attached.

3. Three minutes a session
One set is five questions. It fits a train ride or a break between exercises. No connection needed, so it works anywhere.

WHAT'S INSIDE

- Three-choice questions across three difficulty levels
- Beginner / Advanced / Expert, each split into sets of five
- A full explanation on every question
- Available in many languages, including English, Japanese, German, French and Korean

WHAT THE QUESTIONS COVER

Not just training itself, but everything around it.

- Gear and standards: why a competition barbell weighs 20 kg before you add a plate, the international colour code for plates
- Rules of the sport: the weightlifting event that vanished from the Olympics in 1972, and why
- How the body works: the tendon above your heel carries more than ten times your body weight when you run
- History and culture: "gym" comes from the Greek word for naked, and why ancient long jumpers carried weights
- Word origins: the English word muscle comes from the Latin for "little mouse"
- Animals and physics: an ant carries many times its own weight because of its size, not its muscle

ABOUT THE FACTS

Strength training is a field crowded with claims that are widely believed and poorly supported. Only well-documented facts are used as correct answers here. Where the research is genuinely split, or where a story is a legend, the explanation says so.

Take the idea of "hysterical strength" — the sudden burst that supposedly lets someone lift a car. It has never been reproduced under laboratory conditions, so this app does not claim it is real, and does not claim it is false either.

WHO IT'S FOR

- People who train and want something to talk about
- People who don't train but enjoy an unexpected fact
- Anyone who wants to use a spare few minutes on something more interesting
- Anyone who likes saying "huh, I had no idea"

BEFORE YOU START

- Every feature is available at no cost
- No in-app purchases and no subscriptions
- Ads are shown to support development
- Your results are stored only on your device and are removed if you uninstall

This is a trivia quiz. It does not provide training instruction, or advice about health or body composition.

The app is available in English as well as Japanese, German, French, Spanish and other languages. You can switch languages any time in the settings.
