About this app

KomunikAPP is the first Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app designed in Maltese to support both children and adults with complex communication needs. The app is designed to help support individuals to express their needs and communicate using pictures and text.

The vocabulary consists of over 50,000 pictures using Widget symbols, with a variety of adult and child voices. The app can be customised to the individual’s needs and has three levels of vocabulary; beginner, intermediary and advanced levels. The vocabulary is colour-coded using the Fitzgerald key to allow quicker scanning of words and increase visual access of the different linguistic relationships within the app. The search function allows the quick search and location of words. The keyboard mode allows one to create sentences and write novel words. This is supported with word prediction to help support literacy development.

KomunikAPP is an ideal means of communication for Maltese individuals who want to express their needs, desires and opinions. It promotes the independence of individuals who want to integrate themselves better into society and improves the quality of life of AAC users and their families. The customisable features of the app will ensure its flexibility, functionality and longevity of use.

This project was possible thanks to EPIC, Voluntary Organisations Projects Scheme (VOPS) managed by the Malta Council for Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and the Ministry for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations and Consumer Rights.
