About this app

Established in 1903, Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu has long been dedicated
to the promotion and development of the Urdu language, serving as a
vibrant hub for writers, poets, and scholars. Following the creation of
Pakistan, Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu Pakistan (ATUP) was founded in
1948, building upon this legacy with a remarkable collection of Urdu
books, manuscripts, and literary journals.
Today, ATUP continues its mission by combining Urdu’s rich heritage
with modern technology to make language, literature, and knowledge
more accessible to all. In collaboration with NED University of
Engineering & Technology, ATUP has developed an innovative
application that enables Urdu text to be converted into speech—
something that was previously not possible at scale.
This groundbreaking project was supported by ATUP through funding,
equipment, and student stipends, and involved the efforts of the
Electrical Engineering Faculty and the Neuro Computational Lab
(NCL) at NED University, along with around 300 volunteer students.
The development process, spanning over four and a half years,
addressed the unique challenges of Urdu script—where letter shapes
change depending on context—by leveraging advanced AI
technologies, including Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tools
supported by NVIDIA.
A vast dataset was created using ATUP’s extensive publications,
including Qaumi Zuban, Research Journal Urdu, and numerous Urdu
books and dictionaries. This enabled the system not only to recognize
text accurately but also to pronounce it correctly. In the final stages,
professional software developers M/S Proxima were engaged to refine,
test, and launch the application.
Now available on Android (with iOS release imminent), the App
“آواز ےس نتم) “Text to Speech) brings Urdu into the digital era. It allows
users to convert printed or written Urdu text into audio, listen to
newspapers, books, and columns, and even capture images of text for
instant listening.

This innovation is especially significant in light of concerns raised by
UNESCO regarding Urdu’s vulnerability as a language. The app aims
to support literacy, assist Urdu-speaking communities worldwide, and
help younger generations connect with their linguistic heritage.
