Voice Typing — dictate in any app, hands-free

Voice Typing with AudioPen lets you type with your voice in any app — messaging, email, documents, search — using a floating dictation button. It is designed as an accessibility input tool for people with motor impairments, repetitive strain injuries (RSI), tremor, or limited hand mobility, and for anyone who finds typing on a keyboard difficult, painful, or slow. It's equally useful as a fast, hands-free keyboard for all users.

How it uses the Accessibility API: Voice Typing uses Android's AccessibilityService API to detect when a text field is focused and to insert your dictated text into it — just like a keyboard would. AudioPen only checks which app you're in and whether a text field is focused. It never appears in password fields, and it does not read, collect, or store any other content from your screen. The service does nothing until you enable it in Android Settings, and you can turn it off there at any time.

Accessibility Service Disclosure
AudioPen optionally uses Android's Accessibility Service to let you dictate text into text fields across your device. Android does not provide another way for third-party apps to offer this type of system-wide voice input.

When enabled, the Accessibility Service is used only to support this functionality by:

- Detecting when an editable text field is active so AudioPen can be made available when needed.
- Inserting the transcribed text into the currently selected text field.
- Determining when the on-screen keyboard is visible so AudioPen can appear and behave correctly.
- Collecting limited diagnostic information, such as crash reports and performance data, to help identify and fix technical issues.

AudioPen does not use the Accessibility Service to read, collect, store, or share information from other apps beyond what is necessary to provide voice dictation. It never reads passwords or collects other on-screen content.

You can disable these permissions at any time in Android's Accessibility settings.

Ratings and reviews

So I have learned to love this app. It does an amazing job at dictation. Now I haven't tried local transcription. I'm using the cloud and I am an AudioPen prime subscriber. I use this a lot for taking notes during the day. And I find that its ability to select the style, such as original or in my case technical, and journaling, etc., is very handy because it allows me to create summaries that are better suited for each of the target applications and the topic that I'm discussing.

I love the usability of this app. Pretty neat. I actually wanted to build something like this, a wearable device that could do similar things and actually handle longer conversations like a full meeting. But audio pen is good the way it is. I don't understand some of the comments I was reading before installing. People complaining about pricing and all. May be there are other apps that are cheaper. But I think for what's on offer, it's pretty reasonable.

1) There are 2 totally separate areas for notes, vs. the voice recordings from which notes were made. Totally counterintuitive, since recordings should be playable directly from the respective notes associated with them. 2) Also, updating the app shouldn't result in you needing to sign in again. (If you forgot what email you originally used, you won't see any of your previous notes.) 3) There should be an option for creating a real (and strong) password instead of mandating the stupid OTP.
