About this app

Datum is a surveyor's field sheet for Wear OS. One page, ruled into bands, carrying twenty-four readings, with a graduated levelling staff wrapped around the rim.

THE RULE IT IS BUILT ON
Datum never prints a number it was not given. A complication with nothing assigned to it shows that slot's own assign mark - not a zero, and not a figure borrowed from somewhere else on the dial. The celled bar beside a reading is drawn only for a provider that actually carries a range. Nothing on the page is captioned by us either: the middle row has no printed label, so whatever you put there is named by its own provider rather than by a word we baked in.

THE PAGE, FROM THE RIM INWARDS
The outer arc is the watch battery, starting at twelve and growing clockwise. Inside it a second arc is the step goal. Then the levelling staff: thirty graduated blocks, with a small triangular cursor riding it that marks the minute. That cursor is the only hand on this face.
Under the head come the battery figure and the full date; a margin row of week number, day of year, unread notifications and moon age; an index column of seconds, heart rate and step count beside the large hour; a weather band with the condition mark, the temperature, the day's high and low, the chance of precipitation and the UV index; a three-cell forecast strip for the next three, six and nine hours; then the complication row, two wells at the foot, and a surveyor's bench mark signing the page.

FIVE COMPLICATIONS
Three carry readings, two are app shortcuts, and all five can be changed on the watch.
The middle row takes a ranged value or short text. Give it a gauge and you get the figure and a twelve-cell bar; give it text and you get the text alone, because a bar with nothing behind it would be a lie.
The two wells at the foot take a ranged value, short text or an icon, and arrive showing sunrise and sunset and your next calendar event.
The two small squares either side of the middle row are app-shortcut slots: image only, empty until you assign one, and then they draw that app's own tile. Tap to open it.
Any of the five may be left empty. An empty one shows its assign mark and nothing else.

WHEN THERE IS NO WEATHER
The whole weather block collapses to one quiet line telling you what to allow, instead of a row of dashes pretending to be data.

ALWAYS-ON
One ink on black: the two arcs, four staff marks, the hour, the date, the temperature, heart rate and steps. Measured at under five per cent of the screen lit.

TWELVE SHEETS, THREE GRIDS
Six printed sheets on a light ground - Vellum, Ordnance, Azimuth, Chalk, Sienna and Tidal - and six lit panels on a dark one - Benchmark, Basalt, Marine, Moss, Carmine and Ironstone. Three page grids: survey grid, hatching, or plain. That is thirty-six looks, and a 12- or 24-hour clock on top. Everything is chosen on the watch; there is no phone app to install.

WEATHER NEEDS ONE PERMISSION, ONCE
Wear OS does not grant watch faces location access by default, so the weather band stays on its one-line notice until you allow it: Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager > Location > Watch faces > Allow while using the app. Everything else - the time, the date, the week and day numbers, the battery, steps, heart rate and the moon - works the moment you install it.
