About this app

Strata is a digital watch face built like a rock face. Three vertical layers run the height of the screen: the hour is cut into the first, the minute into the second, and the third carries a column of readings you choose yourself.

FOUR COMPLICATIONS, AND ALL FOUR ARE YOURS

The right-hand column is four complications, one under the other. Press and hold the dial, open Customize, and point each row at whatever you want it to show.

Every one of the four accepts:
- a short text reading
- a ranged value, drawn as a number with a bar filling underneath it
- an app's monochrome icon, or its own small image
- or nothing at all, if you would rather that row stayed clear

They arrive filled. Before you change a thing, the four rows come up on Wear OS's own data sources - battery percent, sunrise and sunset, your step count, and heart rate - so there is nothing to install and no account to make. All four are still yours to swap afterwards.

Each row is sized to the chord of the circle it actually sits on, which is why the two in the middle are the widest. A long reading has room, and nothing runs off the edge of a round screen.

TWO SEDIMENT GAUGES

The bright rule between the hour layer and the minute layer is not a divider. It fills from the bottom across the whole day, midnight to midnight. The rule on the far side of the minute layer fills across the hour and empties at the top of the next one. Two moving parts, no hands, and a glance tells you roughly where you are in the day before you have read a digit.

Under the minute, seven small cells mark the week, and today's is lit.

SIXTEEN COLOURWAYS, EVERY PAIR MEASURED

Four grounds - Basalt, Umber, Verdite and Indigo - each of them dark layered stone with the bedding drawn into the rock rather than printed over it. Four accents - Flare, Glacier, Moss and Bone.

That is sixteen combinations, and each one was measured for contrast before it shipped. The accent is spent only on things that carry a value: the numerals, the two gauges, the lit week cell and your four readings. So the ground can change hue without ever coming up to meet the digits, and no choice you make can bury the time in the rock behind it.

TWELVE OR TWENTY-FOUR HOUR

Chosen on the face itself rather than inherited from the phone. Pick twelve and a small AM or PM sits under the hour.

ALWAYS-ON, CUT BACK TO ALMOST NOTHING

The ambient screen keeps the two numerals, the two gauge channels and the date, and drops the rest. Measured at 3.1 percent of the display lit.

NOTHING OF OURS ON THE DIAL

No logo, no watermark, no maker's mark - in any of the sixteen colourways and in either state. The screen is the time, the date and your four readings.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

There is no weather here, and the face itself asks for no permissions at all: not location, not body sensors. A complication you assign may of course ask for its own. It draws no seconds. There is no companion phone app, no account, no ads and no subscription - one purchase, and that is the end of it.

GETTING IT ONTO THE WATCH

Buy it on the phone, then open the Play Store on the watch, where it will be waiting under your library. Press and hold the current face, swipe to Strata, and tap Customize to set the ground, the accent, the hour format and the four complications.
