VERGE

A machined graphite plate, a crown-wheel rim of 48 teeth, and a recessed analog sub-dial set into the upper half. Every reading you care about is milled into the plate around it.

THE UNITS ARE CHOSEN ON THE WATCH

Most faces take distance, temperature and clock format from your phone's language. This one does not. Three settings live in Customize, on the watch:

• Distance — kilometres or miles
• Temperature — Celsius or Fahrenheit
• Hour — follow the watch, 12-hour, or 24-hour

Switch any of them without touching your phone's language, region or system settings.

THE HANDS NEVER COVER A READING

The movement sits in an off-centre sub-dial, so the hands turn inside a disc that holds no numbers. The digital hour, both unit readouts and all five complications lie outside their reach. Checked in the build, not in a screenshot: 720 of 720 hand positions in a full revolution are clear. There is no minute of the day at which something is hidden.

FIVE COMPLICATIONS

Three data windows — left, right and lower — each take short text, long text, a ranged value, a monochrome icon or a small image, and each may be left empty. They arrive on watch battery, sunrise and sunset, and the date. Two more slots are app shortcuts: point each at any app and the dial draws that app's own icon, never a name we printed into the bezel. All five are yours to reassign, and an unassigned one draws nothing at all — no outline, no placeholder, no reserved gap.

SIX COLOURWAYS

Ember, Signal, Meridian, Citrine, Vermilion and Alloy repaint the hands, the lume, the type and the unit symbols. The plate, the window frames and the applied indices stay neutral metal, so the colour reads as light rather than as paint. With the hand shape, the seconds hand, the hour format and the three always-on levels, that is 864 ways to leave this dial.

ALWAYS-ON

Three levels: hands, time and units; hands only; or a large clock. The full level keeps the hands, the digital hour, the date and both unit readouts on screen, and lights 3.2 per cent of pixels against Wear OS's 15 per cent budget.

TWO THINGS SAID PLAINLY

Distance is estimated from your step count at a 0.75 m stride. Wear OS gives a watch face no distance source at all, so this is an estimate and not a GPS track — but it is an estimate you can read in either unit.

Weather needs one permission, once. Wear OS does not grant watch faces location access by default, so the temperature reads 0 until you allow it: Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager > Location > Watch faces > Allow while using the app. Everything else — time, date, steps, distance, battery, complications — works the moment you install it.
