What is the Bible?
The Bible is the account of God's actions in the world and His purpose for all creation. Written over sixteen centuries, the Bible is the work of more than forty human authors. It is an incredible collection of 66 books in very different styles, all containing the message God intended for us.
This collection of pamphlets contains an astonishing variety of literary styles. It tells many stories about the lives of good and bad people, about battles and journeys, about the life of Jesus, and about the activity of the early church. It comes to us in the form of narratives and dialogues, proverbs and parables, songs and allegories, history and prophecy.
The stories in the Bible were generally not written down as they happened. Rather, they were passed down orally for years before they were finally written down. However, the same themes can be found throughout the book. Along with the diversity, there is also a remarkable unity throughout the entire work.
What is the Bible? Well, in addition to all of the above, the Bible is:
A guide to living life to the fullest. It gives us a roadmap for life’s perilous journey. Or, to put it another way, on our voyage across the ocean of life, the Bible is an anchor.
A storehouse of wonderful stories for children and adults. Do you remember Noah and the ark? Joseph's multicolored cloak? Daniel in the lion's den? Jonah and the fish? Jesus' parables? These stories highlight the triumphs and failures of ordinary people.
A refuge in difficult times. People who are suffering, in prison, and grieving share how turning to the Bible gave them strength in their desperate hour.
A treasure trove of insight into who we are. We are not mindless robots, but magnificent creations of a God who loves us and gives us purpose and destiny.
A reference manual for everyday life. We find standards for our conduct, guidelines for distinguishing right from wrong, and principles to help us navigate a confusing society where "anything goes" often seems to be the case.
