The application “Mar sem Lixo” is intended for professional fishermen, with vessels licensed in Mainland Portugal and adhering to the project “A Pesca por um Mar Sem Lixo”
What are the objectives of this application?
- Allow the quantification and automatic characterization of the residues captured in the fishing nets;
- Know the main places of marine litter accumulation on the Portuguese coast;
- Provide updated and real-time information on the waste collected by the Portuguese fishing fleet.
What is the story behind the application?
Very little is known about the quantities and types of waste found on the ocean floor in mainland Portugal.
However, the characterization of the type of waste that exists on the Portuguese coast and its evaluation are fundamental to determine complementary methodologies to combat this problem, as well as for its integration into the industry.
The development of the project “Fishing for a Sea without Garbage” was a starting point for this problem, as it sensitized the fishing class to the separation of residues on fishing vessels and, consequently, upon arrival on land, through the reinforcement of equipment. available at fishing ports.
This application is a next step in combating marine waste and increasing knowledge about this issue.
Main features of the application:
• Simple and practical to install and use by the fisherman;
• Operation in online and offline mode for when there is no network at sea;
• Records garbage collections, automatically classifies and locates based on photo and GPS coordinates;
• Automatic typing using intelligent algorithms;
• Provides statistics of collections and deliveries made, with rankings of the most environmentally friendly vessels at national level and by fishing port.
