cancompost: what can I compost

About this app

You're standing at the bin holding something, and you don't know if it goes in.

cancompost is a composting guide that answers that in one tap. Search 400+ items — banana peels, pizza boxes, dryer lint, dog waste, "compostable" bags — and get a straight verdict: yes, careful, or no. Then the reasoning behind it: why, which of six composting systems will take it, how to prep it, what to watch out for, and what to do instead when the answer is no.

Everything works offline. The whole dataset ships inside the app, so there is no loading, no account, and no signal required — which matters, because compost heaps are usually at the bottom of the garden.

WHAT'S INSIDE

• 400+ items across ten categories, each with a verdict, the reasoning, prep steps, caveats and common questions
• Search that copes with plain words and typos — "bananna" finds banana peels
• Six bin types per item: hot pile, cold pile, worm bin, bokashi, tumbler and curbside
• Compost calculator for browns & greens — a live carbon-to-nitrogen gauge that tells you exactly what to add to fix your mix
• Bin size calculator — the right system for your household, space and priorities
• An offline cheat sheet of the most-asked items
• Save the handful you look up every week

NO ACCOUNT, NO TRACKING

cancompost collects nothing. It makes no network requests at all. Your saved items stay on your phone.

The guidance comes from the same dataset as cancompost.com, drawn from university extension programs and composting research.
