Who are the Three Wise Men?
Once the end of year festivities end and the New Year begins, in Spain and several other countries there is still the most important day for all our children, the Three Wise Men. Every year, Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6.
Tradition says that the Three Wise Men were in charge of going to the portal of Bethlehem following a star that showed them the way to see the Baby Jesus, who had just been born, and bring gifts. Upon arrival, these three wise men offered him three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. For this reason, every year, when Christmas approaches, all the children begin to write their letters to one of the Three Wise Men (or all three): Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar.
In these letters, the children tell the Kings how well they have behaved throughout the previous year and ask them for the gifts they would like to have on January 6. It is assumed that the better the child has behaved during the year, the better the gift he or she will receive that morning from the Three Wise Men. But all children know that if they have behaved very badly, they run the risk of receiving a lump of coal.
The Three Wise Men travel by camel every year from the East to visit all the children who have written their letter. When they arrive in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, after New Year's Eve, the Three Wise Men tour each of the towns on parades to be able to listen to the children's requests and receive their letters. On the night of January 5, after having seen the city's Three Kings Parade, the children run home after having sent the letter so they can clean their shoes and place them in a good place in the living room. Only in this way will the Three Wise Men know who to leave each gift to.
As they come from very far away and the Kings have a lot of work during the early hours of January 5th to 6th, all the families have the custom of leaving them a little water, nougat or milk so that they and their camels can regain strength.
Thus, when the morning of January 6, Three Kings' Day, arrives, the children of each house get up nervously earlier than usual to run to the place where they left their shoes and sent the letter and discover what gift they have been given.
