About this game

CH960 is a free app for Chess960 — chess where the back-rank pieces start in one of 960 random positions. No memorised openings: pure understanding from move one. The variant is also known as Fischer random chess.

PLAY
• Local game: two players, one device.
• Rated online games with people in three time controls: 5+3, 10+5, 15+10. Your opponents are always real people — computer opponents live only in the training section and are always labelled.
• A game with a friend by link or QR code, with any time control. The link opens in the app or in the browser at ch960.com, so your friend does not need the app.
• Arenas: hourly tournaments.
• Chess960 castling done right: drag the king onto the rook. When a plain king step and castling look alike, the board tells you.
• Pick a starting position by number (0–959) or shuffle. You can even give each side its own setup from the encyclopedia of balanced asymmetric pairs.

LEARN — everything in this section works offline
• A course from zero with mentors: lessons, a beginner's path and a castling trainer.
• 30,000+ puzzles. Every one is a forced win verified by an engine, with a step-by-step explanation of the solution.
• Flow: an endless puzzle feed that tunes itself to your level.
• 1000-day course: your daily portion of tactics — 30 puzzles and a lesson.
• Play a mentor: a ladder of 10 levels with hints, advice and undo. Mentors run on Stockfish and are clearly marked as computer opponents.
• Game review with Stockfish after any game — free.

FREE, HONEST, OPEN
• No ads, no purchases, no donations. Nothing is paywalled and nothing will be.
• No third-party trackers or analytics SDKs. Anonymous usage statistics go only to our own server and can be switched off in Settings.
• The client is free software under the GPLv3 licence. Puzzles are derived from the Lichess puzzle database (CC0).
• 10 languages: English, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese.
• Minimal permissions: internet, notifications, vibration.

What’s new

A fresh look: new icon, light and night themes, a friendlier font and a new home with Play, Learn and Profile tabs. Nine board colours and a lively board — a wave after each move and confetti for a solved puzzle (turn off with Reduce animations). Three move-sound sets, soft interface sounds and optional background music. Every puzzle now shows its goal, like “Mate in 2”. Settings are grouped.
