Hold an old page up to a window and something quietly appears inside it — a bull's head, a crown, a pot with two handles, drawn in light rather than ink. Chainline is a small studio for that moment. It gathers the craft of hand papermaking and the secret language of watermarks into one calm green workspace, where the ribbed shadows of chain lines run behind every card like the wires of a real mould. Nothing here shouts; the app works the way a paper mill does — slowly, by feel, one sheet at a time.

Turn your phone into a Light Box and let its torch shine through a page: the studio walks you through raking light and transmitted light, asks what you see — chain spacing, laid density, the motif and where it sits — and narrows the answer to the papers that match, with a plain explanation of why. Then step to the Vat, choose your fibre, beating time and mould, and shake the device the way a vatman shakes a deckle: the studio measures your stroke and reports formation, grammage, shrinkage and the flaw your sheet will carry when dry. Around those two benches sit an atlas of sixteen historical watermarks, a primer of essays on fibre, sizing and the wove mould, a log for the sheets you make or find, and a twelve-question test for the day you feel confident. Everything lives on the device, offline, like a workshop that never needs a signal.
