Three years ago Mara Voss fell down a stairwell; she was badly hurt and gave up her badge. What she has left is Tessera: an experimental memory implant that plays back the last few minutes of any place she stands in.
Now she takes the cases the police can't close. A founder found dead in a locked office. A judge locked in a house at forty degrees. A car in a ditch on a blind curve in the rain. A fan stabbed in his seat at the very moment thirty-one thousand witnesses were watching the goal. Every case is a complete mystery, and one story runs through them all.
HOW TESSERA PLAYS
Search the scene
Comb hand-drawn locations for what doesn't belong: a door log that doesn't add up, a mug in the wrong place, footprints on black ice. Every clue goes into your notebook.
Question the witnesses
Everyone has a version. Press them on the details, present what you found, and catch the line that doesn't fit. Some questions only open with the right evidence.
Replay the last minutes
Stand where it happened and let Tessera play back what the room saw. It shows you more than anyone will say. But careful: Tessera can't be used in court, so what you see still has to be proved another way.
Name the killer, then prove it
Put the clues together, then name the killer and prove it step by step: when, how and why. Your grade depends on how well you argue it.
AT YOUR SIDE
Inspector Tomas Reyes, the one person in Homicide who still trusts you. Forensic pathologist Dr. Imani Okafor, who knows the time of death before you do. Desk sergeant Dev Malhotra, who answers the phone and finds every record. And in every case, at least one person who is lying.
