About this app

Type in plain text, send ciphertext. Cipher Chronicle is a keyboard and an app to encrypt and decrypt your messages with more than 160 historical and playful methods, from the Caesar cipher to Sherlock Holmes’ dancing men.

A keyboard that encrypts as you type
• Type your message: the ciphertext shows up above the keys, like a translation.
• Confirm to insert it in any app (messaging, email, notes…).
• Symbol ciphers (dancing men, Pigpen, Cistercian numerals…) are inserted as images.
• Tap the text to fix a typo without retyping everything.

Build your very own cipher
• Chain several methods in whatever order you like: Caesar, then Vigenère with your own key, then glyphs…
• Every step shows its result, just like the workshop on cipherchronicle.com.
• Name your ciphers and choose which ones encrypt, decrypt, or both.
• Share a cipher as a QR code: your friend scans it and you both have the same methods and keys.

Decrypt in one tap
• Select some text in any app, then “Encrypt” or “Decrypt” in the menu, next to “Copy”.
• For a message written in symbols, a glyph pad lets you copy it sign by sign.
• “Custom methods” mode to try a chain without saving it.

More than 160 methods
Substitutions (Caesar, ROT13, Atbash, affine), polyalphabetic ciphers (Vigenère, Beaufort, Gronsfeld, Alberti), transpositions (rail fence, turning grille), machines (Enigma), field ciphers (ADFGVX, VIC, Playfair, Hill), codes (Morse, Polybius) and symbol alphabets (dancing men, Pigpen, Zodiac, Cistercian numerals…).

Your messages stay yours
• No account, no Internet connection: the app has no permission to access the network.
• The camera is optional and only used to scan a cipher’s QR code; nothing is saved or sent.
• Plain text never leaves the keyboard: only the ciphertext is inserted.
• Your ciphers stay on your phone. Back up and sync between devices with a file you choose (Drive, Dropbox, local storage…), password-protected if you wish.
