About this game
Battle of Suomussalmi is a turn based strategy game set on the border area between Finland and the USSR during the famous Winter War. From Joni Nuutinen: by a wargamer for the wargamers since 2011. Latest update on January 2026
You are in command of the Finnish forces, defending the most narrow sector of Finland against a surprise Red Army offensive aiming to cut Finland into two parts. In this campaign, you will be defending against two Soviet attacks: Initially, you have to stop and destroy the first wave of the Red Army offensive (the Battle of Suomussalmi) and then regroup to take on the second attack (the Battle of Raate Road). The object of the game is to control the entire map as quickly as possible, but the lakes threaten to scatter both the Soviet and Finnish forces, so long term thinking is a must to be strong at the right place and at the right time.

In order to be victorious, you should coordinate your attacks in two ways. First, as adjacent units give support to an attacking unit, keep your units in groups in order to gain a local superiority, at least for a critical moment. Secondly, it is not the best idea to use brute force when you're an underdog, so it is much preferable to encircle the Red Army units with maneuvering to cut off their supply lines to the Soviet supply cities.

+ Tactical Routes between hexagons marked with a yellow-green arrows (instead of green line between hexagons). Intensity of arrows can be adjusted from settings. Arrow can also be made to be black, and exceptionally this is default in this game due to lighter default background pattern.
