About this game

Turn-based strategy game modelling the German pincer attacks of Operation Zitadel at divisional level - but not forgetting the special heavy tank battalions. Hand-crafted boardgames since 2011. No in-app purchases, your wits alone decide your place in the Hall of Fame.

Historical background: In the summer of 1943, Germans launched Operation Zitadel to regain some of the area lost in the previous year and to encircle the Red Army formations that have given them trouble earlier.
The offensive was unprecedentedly panzer-focused, as German infantry had been depleted in the battles of the previous fall.

The German logic was that if a single panzer division could easily advance hundreds of kilometers in the previous years, then surely a dense concentration of battle-tested panzer divisions reinforced with new heavy tank units could advance a mere 100+ kilometers from the North and South to meet in the middle and then deal with the Soviet reserves.
However, Soviets had detailed knowledge of the German plans, which allowed them to fortify in depth, amass huge reserve armies German intelligence was not aware of, and carry out counterstrikes just as Operation Zitadel was about to begin.

Germans, thinking it would be easy, were disappointed as tanks grinded the bunkers and T34s! Soviets, thinking few defense lines could stop the extraordinary, historic aggregation of armor, were disappointed too.
When the Soviet armored reserves were thrown in to stop panzers breaking through the last defense lines, the end result was a clash on the scale never seen before: thousands of tanks crammed into a relatively small area around Prokhorovka, fighting to determine the direction of WW2.

The objective of the gameplay is two-fold: firstly, link up the two panzer spearheads in the center of the map to cut off all the Soviet units still located on the Western side of the map. Secondly, advance a bit eastwards to seize the next big cities to deal with the Red Army reserves and settle the situation for good.

You will be commanding 50+ German units initially, and that number will grow somewhat with reinforcements and any summoned security divisions. No economy element or fuel logistics - just pure maneuvering and combat without distractions. Map size is 30x50 hexagons. And like all campaigns where you play the underdog, this will offer some defeats and proper challenges.

If you're new to my games, hello, I'm Joni Nuutinen, a solo indie developer from Finland, and I have been making strategy boardgame campaigns since 2011.

If you wish to test the gameplay mechanics before you buy, one of the smaller scenarios in this game series, Operation Cobra, is available: nothing to pay, no ads.

Good luck with the operation!

Will Fey was with a Tiger company gathered to the west of Tomarovka. As the heavy tanks rumbled forward, he and his crew soon found themselves engaging a force of at least 40 counterattacking Soviet tanks. All the Tigers fired together: "We counted the torches of the enemy tanks. After one hour, 12 T-34 tanks were in flames. The other 30 tanks curved wildly back and forth, firing as rapidly as their barrels would deliver. They aimed well, but our armor was very strong. We no longer twitched when a steely finger knocked on our walls. We wiped the flakes of interior paint from our faces, loaded again, aimed, and fired."
