About this app

Stairgauge is a stair calculator and stringer layout tool for deck builders, stair installers, carpenters and serious DIYers. Measure floor to floor, drag the story pole to the total rise (or type it), and the whole stair comes back at once, in the fractions your tape measure reads.

WHAT YOU GET
• Number of risers and riser height, treads and tread depth, total run
• Framing-square settings: tongue on the riser, blade on the tread
• Stringer length, stair angle and the stock length to buy (2×10, 2×12…)
• How much to drop the bottom of the stringer so the first step matches the rest
• Throat: the solid wood left under each notch
• Notch marks along the stringer edge: hook the tape on the first nosing and tick them off
• A drawing of the cut stringer with every dimension

CODE CHECKS FOR FIVE COUNTRIES, ALL FREE
IRC (United States), Approved Document K (England), NBC (Canada), NCC (Australia) and DIN 18065 (Germany). Riser, tread, 2R+G, pitch, headroom, width, nosing, open-riser gaps and flight rise are checked as you change the stair, and every rule shows the section it comes from.

FLOOR FINISHES COUNTED IN
Enter the top and bottom floor finish and the first and last steps come out equal once the floors go down, instead of one tall step and one short.

MATERIALS LIST
Stringers with the stock length to buy, tread boards and riser boards. Stairgauge warns you when the stringer is longer than any stock board and you need a landing.
