The ECOWAVES project focuses on A.S. 2.2: Strengthening the capacity to trans-nationally address environmental vulnerability, fragmentation and protection of ecosystem services in the Adriatic-Ionian region, Topic 2: Management and prevention of the spread of pollution, in particular by developing models aimed at supporting waste management / recycling in port areas.
The countries bordered by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas face serious marine environmental issues in terms of maritime traffic, illegal waste dumping and improper port waste management. The sea or rivers represent an inexhaustible resource for the development of the state and one of the most important natural and social values that must be protected. A consistent transnational marine ecosystem protection policy must be the basis for the long-term conservation of sea lanes and port areas. Treated and untreated waste from boats commonly ends up in waterways, affecting seawater quality, causing potential contamination and pollution. Apart from being an environmental issue, this situation can also turn into a serious threat to human health and the survival of marine species. The main objective of the project is to create a long-term transnational sustainable and well-coordinated ship waste management model, including technical features on port waste management and well-structured communication strategies to share different skills acquired and highly functional waste disposal processes. Innovative models in port waste management systems, monitoring data collection and sharing, deeds of agreement signed by high-speed lines and properly equipped port waste reception areas will be benefits for all partners sharing new policies locally, nationally and transnationally together with good practice manuals and video. Providing new equipment to ports, agreeing with high-speed lines and ship operators will mean a real response to waste management and environmental quality.
