FACTS AND INTERESTING FACTS

The postal addressing system was created with the objective of organizing, streamlining, and facilitating the posting, location, and distribution of mail in a logical way. The system was created by the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Company in May 1971. Until May 1992, postal codes throughout Brazil had the format 00000 (five digits).

With the increase in population, the volume of mail, and the need to create more specific codes for large mail recipients, the five-digit system became insufficient in large cities. Therefore, in May 1992, the Post Office changed the format of postal codes throughout Brazil, which then had eight digits: 00000-000 (five digits - hyphen - three digits).

ZIP CODE STRUCTURE

The first five digits have the same function in the system in effect in the 1970s and 80s and in the current one: to locate the region, state, municipality, and district. The neighborhood (in most cases) and the street (or, if a large recipient of mail, the building, company, etc.) began to be identified by the three-digit suffix added to Brazilian postal codes in 1992.

The purpose of the postal code is to rationalize mail sorting methods by simplifying the stages of the sorting, forwarding, and distribution processes, allowing for mechanized processing using electronic sorting equipment.

Only localities with more than 50,000 inhabitants residing in the urban area have postal codes by street address (Streets, Avenues, Alleys, etc., with certain avenues or streets having more than one postal code). When a municipality does not have a postal code for each street, the generic code – followed by the number -000 – is used, for example: Capão da Canoa, Rio Grande do Sul, CEP 95555-000
