There is always a pause before a photo goes out: is there anything in it that should not be there? A child's face, someone walking past in the background, a document lying on the desk, a phone number sitting in plain view on a screen.

BlurMask finds those things for you and covers them. Photos are processed on your device and are never sent anywhere.


■ It finds them for you

Pick a photo and every face in it is detected and marked. Several people at once is fine, and any face you would rather leave visible can be tapped to exclude it.

It reads the text in the photo too. Card numbers, email addresses, and long runs of digits that look like an ID or an account number are recognized and selected for you in advance. Anything else can still be covered by hand.


■ Five ways to cover

Mosaic, blur, solid fill, noise, and stickers. A slider sets the strength.

For documents and numbers, solid fill is recommended. A mosaic can sometimes be reversed back to the original content, so if you put one over text, the app tells you once.


■ Or cover it yourself

Paint over an area with the brush, or mark one out with a rectangle or an oval. A shape you have drawn can be selected again to resize or rotate it.

Turn on background blur to keep a person or an object sharp while everything behind them goes soft. Useful when a photo gives away where you were.

Undo and redo are there, so you can try things freely.


■ Location data goes too

Photos usually carry the coordinates of the place they were taken. GPS coordinates are removed when you save. Switch on the option and the capture time and camera model go with them.


■ Saving

Choose original, QHD 2048, or FHD 1080, and save as JPEG or PNG. JPEG quality is adjustable, and the estimated file size is shown before you save.


■ Everything happens on the device

Face detection and text recognition both run on your phone. Neither the photo, nor any part of it, nor the detection results leave the device. There is no upload feature in the app at all.

It never asks for storage permission. You pick a photo through the system picker, and the app receives only that one photo.

A once a day reminder helps you keep checking. Set the time to suit you, or turn the notification off.

Pick a light theme, a dark theme, or follow the system setting.


Every editing feature is free to use. Ads are shown, and a one time purchase removes them and unlocks saving at original resolution. It is a single payment, not a subscription.
