Eight hours. Two nurses. Eight bays.
Night Shift is a hospital ward game about indirect control. You never touch a patient. Tap bays in the order you want them seen, then tap a nurse: she walks that route and does what needs doing at each one. Then you watch, and decide what the next route is. Ten at night to six in the morning, in about three minutes.
STEADY IS THE WIN
Nobody gets better here. The best a night does is hold the ward level until morning, and holding it is the whole job.
THE WARD RUNS WITHOUT YOU
People arrive on their own schedule. They get worse on their own clock. Nurses finish a route and stand still until you give them another one, and six in the morning arrives whatever you did. This is the only game we have made that keeps scoring while nobody is touching the screen.
WALKING COSTS
The ward is a spine with two wings, so bay one and bay eight are a long way apart and everything is close to the station. A route that zig-zags spends the night in the corridor. Nothing tells you off for it. You just get less done.
FOUR WORDS FOR HOW SOMEBODY IS
Stable. For observation. Unwell. Acute. That is the whole readout, and it is the same four words the handover uses. Chest pain, a fall with no fracture, confusion, dehydration, pain with no clear cause, somebody who cannot sleep.
THE ONE BAD OUTCOME IS A TRANSFER
Nobody dies in this game. A patient nobody reaches in time is moved to a unit that can take them, the handover counts it, and that is the number the night is judged on. It is not the end of anything, and nothing is shown happening to anyone.
DAWN
The ward is fluorescent teal from ten at night and the colour does not move all night. At six a slow warm wash comes in from the window side, across the floor, bed by bed, and the handover chart types itself out over the top of it, one line at a time. Nothing in the scoring needs the light to change. It changes because that is what the night was for.
NOT A MEDICAL APP
This is a game. It gives no advice, makes no diagnosis and is accurate about nothing.
NO NONSENSE
No energy bar. No timers between nights. No waiting to play. Start the shift, work it, go home. A night you walk out of is kept, and it will be waiting where you left it.
