Chess, clean and quiet. A full-rules chess board that opens instantly, plays offline, and asks for nothing — no ads, no sign-in, no internet permission at all.
Play a friend on one phone, or take on the CPU at four strengths. Every rule is in here, including the ones most phone chess apps skip.
TWO WAYS TO PLAY
• Pass and play — two players share one device, with a board-flip option so each side can face their own pieces.
• Versus CPU — you play White, the engine plays Black.
FOUR CPU LEVELS
• Beginner — plays legal moves at random, good for learning the pieces
• Easy — one-move search, punishes free captures
• Medium — two-move search, sees simple tactics
• Hard — three-move search with alpha-beta pruning and move ordering
The CPU thinks on a background thread, so the board never freezes.
EVERY RULE, PROPERLY
Castling on both sides with all the legality checks. En passant. Pawn promotion where you pick queen, rook, bishop or knight. Check, checkmate and stalemate. And all the quiet draws: threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, and insufficient material. The game tells you exactly which one ended the match.
HELP WHEN YOU WANT IT
Tap a piece and every legal square lights up — dots for quiet moves, rings for captures. Your last move stays highlighted, and your king glows when it is in check. Stuck? Hint runs the engine at Medium strength and shows you a move worth playing. Undo takes back your move, and against the CPU it takes back the reply too, so you land back on your own turn.
CHESS CLOCK
Off, 5, 10 or 15 minutes per side. Both clocks show live in the info panel, and running out of time ends the match properly. The clock pauses the moment the app leaves the foreground — no losing a game to a phone call.
FIVE THEMES
Classic, Tournament, Midnight, Forest and Mono. Three are true dark themes for late-night play, and Mono is near-black for OLED screens. The theme recolours everything, status bar included.
FULLSCREEN BOARD
Hide the panels and system bars and give the whole screen to the board — useful on smaller phones, and the nicest way to play across a table. One tap in the corner brings the interface back.
AT A GLANCE
The info panel keeps whose turn it is, the move number, and the material balance in front of you, or swaps in both clocks when a time control is running. Board coordinates sit along the edges, so following along with a book or a video is easy.
BUILT TO FEEL GOOD
Pieces glide between squares, the selected square pulses, checkmate throws confetti. Subtle haptics on every tap, plus optional tones you can leave switched off. Everything is drawn on a single canvas with no UI framework, so the app is tiny and stays smooth on older phones.
NEVER LOSE A GAME
Leave mid-match — a call, a notification, a closed app — and the position, whose turn it is, the clocks and your settings all come back exactly as you left them.
