PEDIVENT: Understanding the Interaction Between the Child, the Diseased Lung, and the Ventilator
PEDIVENT is a dedicated teaching platform designed to help clinicians understand the interaction between the patient, the diseased lung, and the mechanical ventilator.
The app is built on strong physiological and mathematical foundations, integrating the principles of gas exchange, ventilation, perfusion, lung mechanics, airway resistance, compliance, pressure, flow, volume, and the physics of gas movement. Rather than simply providing ventilator settings or clinical recommendations, PEDIVENT demonstrates why changes in ventilator parameters produce specific changes in lung mechanics, gas exchange, and arterial blood gases.
At its core, PEDIVENT focuses on the dynamic interaction between the patient and the ventilator—how the ventilator delivers pressure, flow, and volume; how the diseased lung responds; and how these interactions ultimately influence ventilation, oxygenation, respiratory mechanics, and ABG values.
The platform allows learners to move beyond memorising ventilator settings and instead understand the physiological consequences of each intervention. Changes in respiratory rate, tidal volume, inspiratory time, PEEP, FiO₂, pressure support, and other parameters can be related directly to changes in alveolar ventilation, oxygenation, CO₂ elimination, airway pressures, lung volumes, pressure–volume relationships, and blood gases.
PEDIVENT is therefore an important educational tool for pediatric intensivists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, neonatologists, fellows, residents, trainees, and all clinicians involved in mechanical ventilation.
The emphasis is not on telling the learner what to do, but on helping the learner understand what is happening inside the patient when a ventilator setting is changed.
