About this app

Welcome to Dharohar Weaves, an initiative to preserve the heritage of Banarasi weaving art. We aim to protect the dying art and revive it to its previous glory by promoting the age-old tradition of draping Banarasi brocades.

DHAROHAR: REVIVING THE GLORY OF BANARASI WEAVING ART
"Dharohar" is a Hindi word that holds deep significance in the context of Indian culture and heritage. It represents the traditions, customs, and historical legacy passed down through generations. Embodying this essence, Dharohar is an initiative founded by Dr. Priyanka, a practicing diabetologist and Director of Satkriti Hospitals Private Limited, Varanasi, with a mission to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Banarasi weaving art.
Dr. Priyanka was inspired to start Dharohar after hearing stories from weavers (Bunkars) who were struggling with poor working conditions, exploitation by middlemen, and low pay. Many felt their craft was no longer valued and didn't want their children to continue the tradition. Moved by their hardship, Dr. Priyanka started Dharohar to help these artisans by providing a direct platform to sell their handcrafted products to a global audience, eliminating the need for exploitative intermediaries.
Even without a background in textiles, her passion for Banarasi sarees and appreciation for the artisans' work has been her driving force. She sees each saree not just as a piece of fabric but as an artist's creation and a testament to India's rich heritage.

ABOUT BANARASI HANDWEAVING

MISSION
"Reviving the glory of Banarasi handweaving art, preserving our rich cultural heritage and uplifting the lives of its artisans."

HISTORY
The history of the Banarasi saree goes back hundreds of years, with mentions in ancient Hindu and Buddhist scriptures. Originally woven with cotton, the craft flourished during the Mughal era when artisans began using fine silks with real gold and silver threads, and incorporating Mughal-inspired motifs. Some weaving techniques, such as Mashru and Rangkaat Tanchoi, are still known today, but many have been lost as weavers have been forced to leave the profession. Dharohar believes it's our collective responsibility to continue this legacy by encouraging people to wear Banarasi weaves not only for their beauty but also to honor the craftsmanship behind them.

CORE VALUES OF DHAROHAR
Ensuring every product is a genuine example of handwoven artistry.
Paying weavers fairly for their skill and hard work.
Building trust with customers through honest practices.
Using eco-friendly methods and materials.
Honoring traditional craftsmanship to keep the art form alive.
Creating products that are safe for both people and the planet.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS OF DHAROHAR
Showcasing Excellence: Successfully organized exhibitions, bringing handwoven artistry to the forefront and connecting artisans with a wider audience.
Weaver Welfare Initiatives: Conducted health camps to support and motivate artisans by offering free OPD services, consultations, and essential health benefits.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER
Dr. Priyanka shares, "Banarasi sarees are not just drapes; they are living testimony to our rich cultural heritage. My journey with Banarasi handlooms began when I witnessed the profound dedication and artistry of the weavers. Every visit to a weaving cluster feels like a symphony of creativity, with the rhythmic sounds of looms weaving stories of resilience and passion. It pains me to see this marvelous art form not receiving the respect it deserves. Dharohar is my humble effort to preserve this legacy and ensure that the tradition of wearing Banarasi sarees continues for generations."
