What is Bathing Water?

Do you want to know if there are good conditions for a trip to the beach? Click on a flag and see the quality of the bathing water and the beach weather. With the red flag, food can pose a health risk.

How is the color of the flags put?
Each flag in the map represents a beach and each beach is represented in the model. Thus, the model can obtain data for the bacterial concentrations around the beach. Data is used to set the color of the flag representing the beach as follows:

• A green flag is set when it is predicted to be good bathing water quality. This means that
the bacterial concentrations at no time during the affected day come
exceed the established limit values

• A red flag is set when it is predicted to have poor bathing water quality. This means that
the bacterial concentration at any time during the day in question comes
exceed the established limit values.

• The limit value for good bathing water quality is 500 E. coli per 100 ml and 200 respectively
Enterococci per 100 ml.

• A yellow flag is set if it is not possible to predict the bathing water quality
the beach. The reason for this can be seen if you hold the mouse pointer over.

What causes a warning in bathing water?

The forecast for bathing water quality is based on computer simulations of concentrations of the bacteria E. coli and Enterococci in the bathing water. The presence of these types of bacteria indicates that the water is polluted by wastewater and that the bathing water may contain disease-causing bacteria.
Low concentrations of the bacteria do not pose a health risk. The EU has set limit values for when bacteria pose a health risk and when bathers should be warned. In the warning system, a red flag is set if the computer simulations show that there is a risk that the limit values will be exceeded.
The data model's forecast of the risk of high concentrations of E. coli and Enterococci is based on data on discharges of treated wastewater to the sea or to watercourses that open into the sea.

Normally, only treated wastewater is discharged via the treatment plant's discharge line in quantities that do not cause problems. However, in connection with heavy rain, the sewage system does not have the capacity to transport all water and untreated water is discharged via overflow drains and larger amounts of water than usual are discharged through the discharge pipes.
