The project "A hug for the third e-district" aims to defend the right of equal access and participation of people 65+ in the digital world and is implemented over a period of 22 months in 5 cities in Greece (Patras, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Chania, Athens ).
Technology in recent years is evolving rapidly, exerting a great influence in all areas of our lives. The positive turn of Greece towards a modern digital world - digitalization of public services, local government, e-banking - proceeds by excluding people 65+ from equal access and participation, as the UN information note (2020) points out.
The data show that 78% of the population 65+ have never used a computer, only 2% have above-average digital knowledge, e-banking is used by 8% and e-shopping by 6% of people 65 -74. In addition to digital illiteracy, the non-age-friendly design of websites and platforms works. The EESC, in its opinion (2016) [1], recommends the immediate facilitation of older people's access to the digital world by adapting digital hardware, software and instructions to ensure equal integration of older people. .
The project responds to the need for equal inclusion of people 65+ in the digital world. Digital illiteracy, non-age-friendly platforms and societal stereotypes for the elderly prevent people 65+ from using digital tools that will facilitate their daily lives and improve their quality of life. At a time when government services, banks, markets, and even medical services are being digitized, the right to equal inclusion in the digital world affects everyone regardless of age.
The "Hug65 +" application will be developed by InterMediaKT together with 20 people 65+ creating a digital educational tool for the rights of the elderly made by them for those. Through (and) the application 400 beneficiaries will be educated on their rights and how they can use the application to share their digital needs. The trainings will be the result of the collaboration of the 2 partners, InterMediaKT & People Behind.
